What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Best-case offensive upside (peak season points potential). Forwards: 8.0 ≈ 80 points. Defense and goalie scales differ.

Scouting Feed

Beckner is doing everything right for a seventh-round pick trying to get noticed by his NHL team. Leading Colorado College in scoring for the second consecutive year, he has eight goals and 23 points in 30 games. He is prone to cold streaks and scores in bunches with eight multi-point games accounting for the bulk of his production on the season. Even when he goes cold, he is engaged in the game on both sides of the puck and doesn’t appear to be a liability defensively. Ottawa has not signed him to an ELC yet, and another year of sustained success at the college level may be required before the Sens take that step. An AHL look is the logical next destination when the time comes. A long-term watchlist candidate in the deepest dynasty formats, but worth tracking given what he has produced relative to his draft position.

Beckner was selected in the seventh round (204th overall) in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. After two seasons in the BCHL with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, Beckner made the jump to the USHL during the 2023-24 season and played for the Tri-City Storm, where he played 61 regular season games and produced 45 points (14 goals and 31 assists) and contributed four points (three goals and one assist) in six playoff games with the Storm. After that season, he moved to the NCAA and played at Colorado College for the 2024-25 season. Beckner is well off the fantasy radar; once he signs with the Senators’ organization and turns pro, it will be a better time to gauge his development and determine his future fantasy relevancy.
