What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

Wiebe signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames in April 2026. His deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $950K and runs through the 2027-28 season.

Wiebe’s NHL draft rights were traded to the Calgary Flames at as part of the Rasmus Andersson trade to the Vegas Golden Knights. While a roster player (Zach Whitecloud) and high-level picks were likely the targets in that deal, there is little doubt the Flames targeted the defender from the University of North Dakota in talks. The 22-year-old defender has registered 27 points in 37 games during the 2025-26 campaign. Wiebe has amassed 61 points in 115 games for the Fighting Hawks over three college campaigns. He could be a player to watch as Calgary completes the transition to a much younger defensive unit in 2026-27, but don’t be shocked to see the Flames send him to the Calgary Wranglers to learn the pro game .

In his third collegiate season, Wiebe sees himself skating with an ‘A’ on his chest, and the extra responsibility for the team could have boosted his confidence on the ice somewhat. He has come out of the gate with a goal and two assists across his first four matchups, and is consistently seeing 20 minutes in ice-time a night.

The NCAA sophomore took a step up offensively in 2024-2025, seeing four goals and 20 assists across 38 games. Wiebe was a seventh-round selection of the Vegas Golden Knights, and one of the better blueline options in their prospect pipeline. He is not a lock to feature at the NHL level any time soon, but the 21 year-old should get his chance to test his mettle against men at the professional level after what is likely to be his last go-round with the University of North Dakota. He isn’t worth rostering in fantasy yet, but given the dearth of defensemen in the Golden Knights’ pipeline, and some of their incumbent defenders growing long in the tooth, he could be worth watchlisting.

Wiebe will be a long shot to skate on the Vegas Golden Knights blue line for meaningful minutes, but his development has been on a consistent uptrend for the University of North Dakota. He remains a watchlist, not a roster, and his eventual transition to the NHL will give us more data to see if that becomes necessary to change.
