Projected potential

Bio

Diminutive but quick and athletic Russian goalie. His quickness and agility makes up for his short stature, and early results in the KHL look fantastic. Time will tell if he makes the jump to North America.

PNHLe

PNHLe data is not available for this prospect yet.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

NHL Certainty
6.5
65% odds
Odds of becoming a full-time NHL player (10.0 = 100%). Draft guideline is a starting point and should rise as the prospect proves himself.
Upside
8.5

Best-case offensive upside (peak season points potential). Forwards: 8.0 ≈ 80 points. Defense and goalie scales differ.

Scouting Feed

Consistently putting up above a .900 SV% wherever he plays, Ivanov continues making the case he should get an opportunity in North America soon. Columbus is supportive of undersized goalies as well, so Ivanov’s chance to show he can be impactful at the NHL level is likely coming when his KHL contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season. It will be interesting to see who gets the starting role for SKA St. Petersburg in 2025-26, as two taller and very talented goalies, Moysevich and Zavragin, compete for playing time alongside Ivanov.

Ivanov is a Russian goaltender who the Blue Jackets selected in the 5th round of the 2022 NHL Draft. His most significant question marks were size and nationality, as he is Russian and stands at just 5-11. However, he is very athletic and quick along the ice, covering the ground he can’t physically reach. His stats have been growing more and more impressive since being drafted, and he had a big coming-out this year. In the KHL with Admiral Vladivostok (the league’s worst team), he posted fantastic numbers of 0.928 SV% and 2.63 GAA. Ivanov appears to possess the skills to compensate for his physical downsides, but genuine question marks remain about whether he will make the jump to North America. In a pretty bare Columbus Blue Jackets goalie prospect cupboard, if he does make it over, Ivanov would be a big boon for the up-and-coming team.
