Martone signed his entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on March 29. The 19-year-old winger scored 25 goals and posted 50 points in 35 games with the Michigan State Spartans (NCAA) in the 2025-26 season. Martone won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the 2026 World Junior Championships where he scored six goals and totaled nine points in seven games. The 6-3 winger is projected as a top-6 power forward with playmaking skills. Martone’s addition could have an immediate impact on Philadelphia’s league-worst powerplay, so fantasy GM’s would be smart to claim him for an added scoring punch in your league playoffs (or next season for dynasty player), if available.
Post Draft Prospect Review: Viggo Björck (WPG | 8th OVR 2026)
This summer, after being selected 8th overall by the Winnipeg Jets, Viggo chose to leave Sweden and join the Jets right away. Extremely rare for prospects outside the top 3. Only happening for a handful of players in the last few years. Not only does Björck project as an NHLer, but as a Top 6er to fill the Jets’ void at second-line center. If he proves he can hold his own as a top-of-the-lineup player right away, he will be in contention for the Calder with players like Gavin McKenna, Porter Martone, and Ivar Stenberg.
The Blackhawks have two of the top Calder favorites in 2027
The 2027 Calder race will be one to keep a close eye on, with high-end rookies like Gavin McKenna, Ivar Stenberg, Cole Hutson, Porter Martone, and James Hagens competing for rookie of the year, all of whom are all expected to play large roles on their respective teams.
Martone dominated the OHL last season totaling 98 points in 57 games for the Brampton Steelheads. Due to a run on the center position in the 2025 NHL Draft, Martone fell to the Flyers at 6th overall when most publications had him ranked as a top three selection. He is a winger with size and plus-scoring ability who could prove to be an excellent compliment to Matvei Michkov.
Selected at sixth overall, Porter Martone is now a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. Shortly after draft weekend, Martone announced his commitment to Michigan State of the NCAA.
Martone may not be getting as much buzz for first-overall, but its hard to find issue with his body of work. So far, Martone has been one of the CHL’s best. A big winger with an edge and a huge bag of tricks, Martone has used his frame, physicality, shot, creativity, and highlight-reel hands to run roughshod over the OHL, truly leading by example as captain of the Brampton Steelheads. Though he’s coming off a less-than-stellar World Juniors appearance, between his pro-ready frame and his ridiculous production in the OHL, it is hard to see Martone lasting long on draft day.
Next-Level Defense: How Matthew Schaefer Is Rewriting the Role of a Blueliner
Matthew Schaefer is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting prospects heading into the 2025 NHL Draft. At 6’2″ and 175 pounds, he combines elite skating, high-end hockey IQ, and a complete two-way game that sets him apart from virtually every defenseman in his class. Ten out of ten scouts have him pegged as the projected No. 1 overall pick, and seven of those scouts believe the gap between Schaefer and the next tier—names like James Hagens, Michael Misa, and Porter Martone—is substantial.
CHL Vs USA Hockey Top Prospect Game 2
#94 F, Porter Martone
Team: CHL: Brampton Steelheads (OHL)
Height/Weight: 6’3”, 196Ibs
Shoots: Right
DOB October 26th, 2006
Overview:
Porter Martone is the definition of an offensive dynamo for the Steelheads—a player who’s hard to stop and a true leader on the ice. When Martone has the puck, it stays on his stick until he’s ready to let it fly or make a pinpoint pass. He’s an agile, dynamic centerman with a full arsenal of moves, playing with poise and a nearly unmatched awareness, like he’s got eyes in the back of his head. His passing is elite, with each one flat and crisp, and up the ice, he maneuvers with the puck as if he’s surfing through defenders. He’s not the fastest skater, but his stride mechanics and agility shine through, allowing him to fend off opponents with strong edgework—impressive for someone at 6’3. While known as a playmaker with great anticipation, his powerful wrist shot makes him a serious dual threat. Defensively, he’s solid too, strong at intercepting passes and protecting the puck, making it tough for opponents to regain control. By improving his consistency however at throwing the body, with the skill set that he has with the size that he brings, Martone is absolutely destined to become top-three NHL draft pick in the making and a future superstar playmaking/power forward.

What knocks off some points regarding to Martone’s skating is that although he’s agile, he’s not explosive as he doesn’t have the same quickness in his footwork compared to others. While known as a playmaker with great anticipation, his powerful wrist shot makes him a serious dual threat. DRAFTPRO – 2024 IIHF U18 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW – CANADA
#22 F Porter Martone, Mississauga (OHL), 6’3” 170 R. 26-10-2006 Martone was named captain and the only returnee for Canada at the tournament. Playing on a line with Gavin McKenna (Medicine Hat) and Caleb Desnoyers (Moncton), all three forwards are not eligible until the 2025 and 2026 NHL Draft. Martone is not draft eligible until 2025 because he was born with a late 2006 birthday. The combination of skill and size Martone possesses was too much for defenders throughout the tournament. Watching Martone with the puck, he draws in multiple defenders to challenge him for the puck forcing the defence to collapse and create valuable open space for his teammates in the offensive zone. Martone is so effective at shielding the puck with his size and thoroughly understands how to use his body to gain advantages on the ice. Martone plays similar to a power forward; he finishes his checks, he hunts down pucks and uses his body to create offence. Yet, his skill with the puck is his strongest trait. Martone was a perfect fit for a top line with McKenna and Desnoyers, players that create offence using speed and quick in transition, Martone was so effective for this line because he utilized his size to create space on the ice for McKenna, who is so dangerous playing with speed and open space, and Martone possesses great passing ability that allowed him dish pucks out into open space for teammates in high danger scoring areas. Martone finished the tournament with 17 points, 5 goals and 12 assists in 7 games. He possesses a strong shot, capable of scoring from distance and great hand-eye coordination, he keeps plays alive in the offensive zone by batting down pucks out of the air and even scored a goal against Kazakhstan by batting the puck out of the air. Important to consider, Martone recorded secondary assists in the semi-final and gold medal game. Although secondary assists are not always praised as much as primary assists by some, His effort on the assists should be noted as Martone started the scoring play and through his effective passing and puck protection, it led to significant goals for Canada in the respected hockey games. Martone is projected as a top prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft and will be a key player for a highly competitive Steelheads team aiming to make an OHL Championship run next season.
2024 NHL DRAFT – DRAFTPRO 2023 SUMMER INTERNATIONAL EVENT REVIEW
Porter Martone, RW, Canada, 6’3”, 170, R, 2025 NHL Draft eligible. Martone was the definition of an offensive dynamo for the Canadians that was hard for opponents to stop. When that puck is on Martone’s stick, that puck is not coming off until Porter decides to either let it rip or dish. Martone is a dynamic, agile and playmaking centerman who has an arsenal of weapons. Every time he has the puck, he seems to carry tremendous poise and has awareness like none other as it seems like he has eyes in the back of his head. He has elite soft touching passing skills as every pass comes flat and crisp. Even though he’s not the fastest guy on the ice, he has certainly tremendous amounts of agility as he can fend off defenders like none other due to his tremendous edgework, especially being a guy at 6’3. – Tyler Ballesteros-Willard
Martone is due to join Michigan State (NCAA) for the 2025-26 season, where he will join second-round pick Shane Vansaghi in the quest for an NCAA Championship in 2025-26. He could be a late season addition for the Flyers following the conclusion of the NCAA schedule after expressing an intent to try to make the Flyers out of training camp this season. Martone is expected to play for Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships in December 2025.
Final Rankings – In the first half of the season, Martone looked like he could challenge for the first overall pick. The 6’3 winger was producing at over a 2PPG pace while looking like a dominant offensive catalyst. After a quiet World Juniors, Martone seemed to fade a bit while appearing less confident, losing his chance at contending for a top pick. An average skater who can lose out in chases hasn’t helped his case. Despite having a power forward build, Martone hasn’t emerged as such beyond having the frame to one day do it. Some moments of flash and intensity seem to indicate there’s more Martone can do that he’s still unlocking, he may need a bit more time to get to his peak, much like Tom Wilson as a youngster who took a few years in the NHL to get to where he is now. A good Worlds seems to have renewed his confidence and optimism that he’ll be able to bounce back next season. First line potential, especially if the physicality comes.—
