Projected potential

Bio

Guskov is a 200-foot player who flashes offensive tools but consistency and opportunity are an issue at the moment.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

At the completion of the 2019-2020 season, when Guskov was playing in the OHL, he returned to Russia, and has been playing there ever since. With stops in the MHL and VHL along the way, Guskov has been playing the KHL since the 2022-2023 season, with last year being one where he suited up for three separate teams. Across 38 games, he saw limited deployment, and limited success with only one goal and three assists. His fantasy relevance is effectively nil as he is unlikely to feature in an NHL role at this point.

Guskov is a former 5th round pick for the Minnesota Wild during the 2019 NHL Draft that is struggling to find his way in Russia. Although Minnesota currently has his NHL rights, he has yet to sign an ELC with the team. Guskov had an up and down season in the KHL, posting only nine points in 37 games playing 16 games in the VHL. It remains to be seen whether Minnesota will continue to retain Guskov’s rights and whether he still has NHL potential.

Guskov is a former 5th-round pick of the Wild back in 2019 and currently plays for the CSKA Moscow in the KHL. After spending time in Canada playing for the London Knights of the OHL, Guskov immediately went back home to start his professional career in Russia. It is unknown whether Guskov will ever make his way over to play for the Wild organization. However, he is young enough and skilled enough to one day make an impact. He had a strong 2021-22 season for CSKA Moscow as a young player, but he is a mystery for the Wild organization moving forward.

Guskov is off to only a decent start in the MHL with 10 points in 14 games. He hasn’t displayed much growth since being drafted in 2019 and his NHL prospects appear to be dwindling.

Matvey Guskov has been returned to London of the OHL for the 2019-20 season. He’ll receive an increased role with a perennially dangerous London team.

The Minnesota Wild’s 5th round selection in the 2019 NHL Draft is a solid two-way center for the London Knights. His point totals were somewhat muted by a limited role as a draft eligible player on a competitive team but the young Russian showed flashes of high-end skill and finishing touch. Guskov is a good skater who accelerates to his top speed quite efficiently and with good technical stride. He can be easily be knocked off the puck at times but some physical maturing should help with that. From a fantasy perspective, Guskov has upside as a middle-six scorer who can help produce on a third line. He is a skilled, 200-foot center who plays a the role of a prototypical, modern third line center. Some further development and an expanded role with London this upcoming season could lead to this puck looking much more valuable a year from now.
