Projected potential

Bio

Smooth skating offensively-minded forward. Needs to round out the rest of his game to earn opportunities to let his offense shine but possesses legitimate upside as a scoring threat at the NHL level.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

NHL Certainty
6.0
60% odds
Odds of becoming a full-time NHL player (10.0 = 100%). Draft guideline is a starting point and should rise as the prospect proves himself.
Upside
6.0

Best-case offensive upside (peak season points potential). Forwards: 8.0 ≈ 80 points. Defense and goalie scales differ.

Scouting Feed

Persson played in the Liiga for 2024-25 and struggled to produce, recording 16 points in 52 games. He did have three assists in five playoff games though. It is a lot tougher of a league than the Mestis, but considering Persson’s skill and pedigree, a lot more production would be expected. He will come to North America and is very likely play for the Hershey Bears. Hopefully, he can garner a top six spot but expect the team to prefer him to work his way up from the third line at least.

For 2023-24, Persson was loaned to the Mestis league for IPK. The new team, and league, really helped Persson break out this season with 55 points in 48 games. It is a little concerning that of those 55 points just 10 were goals, so secondary assists may be inflating his totals. The next season for Persson will be telling as he should be in either the SHL or the Liiga, hopefully not another season in the lower tiered leagues (Mestis or HockeyAllsvenskan) as he needs to show his abilities playing with better competition.

Persson scored 15 points in 45 games for BIK Karlskoga, which is pretty underwhelming considering his previous season. He may have been overwhelmed with the higher tier but many expected him to produce better.

Persson was loaned to BIK Karlskoga of the HockeyAllsvenskan league as he surprisingly signed his three-year ELC in the off season after he was drafted. Last season he jumped between the J20, where he was a top player, and the SHL, where he struggled. The HA league will be perfect for him as it should really suit where he is as a prospect.

Persson was drafted 85th overall by the Capitals. There is upside here but it will take proper development to get there.

Persson finished second in scoring in the J20 Nationell this season with 25 goals and 36 assists in 41 contests. His main strength is that he plays a high-pace game and is a sound skater. He has a quick first step and often leads the breakout. On the rush, Persson typically looks for a pass as soon as he enters the zone, rather than driving to the net himself. He occasionally struggles to find space on the rush and can be forced into the wall or corner despite his speed advantage. With 25 goals this season, it’s clear he can find a way to put the puck in the back of the net, whether by wrist shot, wraparound, or using his skating to find space. A third of Persson’s 61 points came on the power play, where he mostly earned assists, many on redirections or clean-ups of his shot.

There are concerns about how high-end Persson’s skill set is, taking into account his defensive play and positioning errors, though he is ready for a stronger league. He did have chances with Frölunda during the past few seasons but received little ice time. Although he lacked offensive production, the pace or talent level of top-tier men’s hockey did not overwhelm Persson. Either way, his loan to BIK Karlskoga next season will provide him with more opportunities than he would likely receive in the SHL.
