Projected potential

Bio

Right-shot power winger with cutback-and-drive game, inside timing, and middle-lane touches. Projects for depth scoring with some hits and PIM if the physical element carries up levels.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

Top-nine right wing for Sherbrooke with early PP2 looks and a hot start to the schedule. Houle’s toolkit is built on pace through hands, quick scans before first touch, and a sequence of cutbacks that move play from the wall to the interior. He protects with a low base, goes heel-to-heel to slip pressure, and finds quick give-and-go outlets rather than overhandling. Off puck he times arrivals into soft ice and supports as the third man high, creating second-touch offense. He can get stuck along the boards when heavy sticks trap him, and under contact his first pass can rush, so continued strength gains and quicker shoulder checks will help. For fantasy, production comes from even-strength goals off inside cuts plus secondary PP touches, with peripheral help from a physical style. If the shot holds from the dots and the retrieval-to-first-pass window tightens, a bottom-six NHL role with 40–50 point peak outcomes is realistic.
