Projected potential

Bio

Undersized offensive defenseman with great mobility and puck skills. Needs to continue to mature physically but has the skill to reach the NHL.

PNHLe

Projected potential: 292025-26 · KHL · Severstal Cherepovets

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

For an undersized defenseman like Grudinin, the fact that he has been able to manage almost two full seasons at the KHL level by age 21 is impressive. However, he is not putting up many points, averaging 0.22 points per game in 2024-25 over 63 games and 0.2 points per game in 2023-24 over 50 games. While there is a slight progression in offensive output, he is not producing at a rate that warrants a spot on even the deepest dynasty watch list, as his size will limit his ability to get your team hits and blocked shots if he ever does make it to the NHL.

Grudinin was loaned from CSKA in the KHL to Severstal at the beginning of the year, as he wasn’t going to get much time for a CSKA team that is trying to compete. He’s taken this trade in stride and has won the confidence of the coaching staff, going from around 8 minutes a night with CSKA to almost 18 minutes with Severstal. Grudinin has 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points in 35 games while playing in all situations. His skating is pretty solid and his defense is above average, but he isn’t that impactful in the offensive zone, which is weird for a player of his size. Grudinin still has another year on his contract, so he’s still a few years away from making the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes have selected Grudinin in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Vladimir Grudinin is a part of the new era of mobile defencemen that has been on the rise in hockey. Grudinin has been up and down the CSKA organization this year, playing in the MHL, VHL, and KHL. He has been most successful in the MHL, producing nine points in 15 games, while averaging 17 minutes of ice time. Grudinin was recently named to Russia’s World Junior team and will look to build on his success to boost his draft stock.

Grudinin is a small, extremely mobile defenceman that relies on his speed and puck handling to advance the play. His biggest strength is his skating and he plays a strong north-south game, which he combines with good edgework to switch up the angles and point of attack when driving play. Grudinin has a ton of offensive talent and is not afraid to work the puck down low as a defenceman. He is often relied upon to play quarterback for Krasnaya on the powerplay. When Grudinin has the puck on the blueline, he uses his elusiveness to walk the blueline and open up passing lanes, which often lead to scoring opportunities. Grudinin has also been impressive when defending the rush, using his active stick to stop rushes before the opposition can capitalize. The biggest area of Grudinin’s game that needs improvement is his physical game. As a 5-9 defenceman, Grudinin would benefit from adding strength to his frame, allowing him to control the puck better and win more puck battles in the corners. Another part of his game that needs improvement is his decision-making under pressure in his own end. Sometimes when he is pressured, he throws the puck up the boards rather than taking the split second he has to find an open teammate to start a breakout. Overall, Grudinin’s strengths outweigh his weaknesses and make him an intriguing prospect that a team should take a flyer on in the first half of the 2022 NHL draft.
