Projected potential

Bio

Heavy two-way center who wins the middle of the ice and competes on retrievals. Middle-six fantasy upside that depends on the offense finding another gear.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

Ruohonen finished his Harvard freshman year with 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 20 NCAA games, centering an all-rookie line alongside Aidan Lane and Richard Gallant, and backed it with a strong World Juniors. Named an alternate captain for Finland, he shared the team scoring lead heading into the medal round. The NCAA total is modest, but the underlying game is the draw. He is a two-way center who drives play, pushes the pace, and has power forward qualities, using explosive weight shifts to beat defenders to the inside and contact to win body positioning. That profile projects as a genuine top-nine option rather than a tweener, and Philadelphia paid for it, packaging a pair of picks to move up into the fourth round. For fantasy, the upside is a middle-six center who chips in secondary scoring and peripherals such as hits and faceoffs, not a power-play driver. The offense needs another gear for that to land, specifically a quicker release and more consistent half-wall production at five-on-five. A sophomore season at Harvard with a scoring-line role and a points-per-game climb toward 0.9 would be the signal that the tools are converting.
