Prokhorov’s first professional season has been a winding road – one goal in 12 KHL games with Dynamo Moscow on the fourth line at fewer than five minutes a night, multiple reassignments through the VHL and MHL, and a slow start before things began to click. A strong showing captaining Russia’s U20 Future Cup team – a goal and two assists in three games – appeared to spark something, and he has since settled into the VHL where he is finally getting the reps against older competition his development demands. At 6-6 and 18, he was simply too physically dominant for junior hockey. For his size he moves incredibly well – fast, fluid, and powerful in full stride, tough to knock off the puck, with flashes of high-end vision and the ability to thread passes most players wouldn’t see. The defensive awareness and shot accuracy need work, but these are fixable issues with structure and experience. With the overseas situation uncertain, the Islanders may benefit from bringing him to North America sooner rather than later. A long-range hold with upside if the development arc continues.

Prokhorov opened the 2025-26 season with Dynamo Moscow in the KHL, but with just one goal in 12 games, stuck on the fourth line and playing under five minutes a night, he never found his footing. He was sent to the VHL with Dynamo St. Petersburg and went scoreless in two games before being reassigned to MHL Dynamo Moscow. After three more scoreless games, he finally found a spark while captaining Russia’s U20 Future Cup team, putting up a goal and two assists in three games.

The New York Islanders signed Prokhorov to a three-year entry-level contract on September 2, 2025. He is a massive power winger who plays a hard-nosed, net-front game. Prokhorov tallied 20 goals in 43 MHL games, showcasing a strong shot and relentless forecheck. While still raw, his combination of size, strength, and scoring touch gives him intriguing middle-six upside if he can round out his puck skills and decision-making. Prokhorov has made Dynamo Moscow out of training camp and will play in the KHL during the 2025-26 season.

Selected at forty-second overall, Daniil Prokhorov is now a member of the New York Islanders.

That momentum carried over when he returned to the MHL, where he posted five points in three games and earned another call-up to the VHL. He now has one goal and two assists in his last three games there, finally settling into a league where he faces older, stronger competition.

At 6-6 and only 18 years old, Prokhorov was too physically dominant for junior hockey. He needs reps against pros to learn how to use his frame and skill set effectively, so even with all the movement this season, playing full-time in a men’s league is precisely what his development needed. His path for next season is still unclear, but given the uncertainty overseas, it might be in the Islanders’ best interest to bring him over sooner rather than later.

For his size, he moves incredibly well, fast, fluid, and powerful in full stride. He is tough to knock off the puck and has flashes of high-end vision, using shot fakes to open lanes, and threading passes most players wouldn’t see. He finishes every check and can be a force on the forecheck. The areas that need work are his defensive awareness, not leaving the defensive zone early, and improving shot accuracy. These are all fixable with structure and experience.

Final Rankings – Daniil Prokhorov is one of the draft’s most physically imposing prospects, combining a 6-5 frame with an aggressive, heat-seeking missile approach on the forecheck that few NHLers—let alone draft-eligible players—can match. Prokhorov’s physical dominance and straight-line tools give him a high floor as an energy forward, but continued development is necessary to raise his offensive ceiling.—
