Projected potential

Bio

Strong two-way, puck-moving defenseman with good vision and some offensive upside. His ability to manipulate defenders to open a passing lane and create opportunities for his teammates helps to drive play for his team in every area of the ice. He has great discipline and uses his skating to help provide stability to the backend, allowing for consistently positive plus-minus statistics that can help contribute to leagues with that category.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.

Scouting Feed

With their sixth-round selection in the 2024 NHL draft, the New York Islanders took a swing at a solid two-way Canadian defenseman, Xavier Veilleux. This pick is a solid choice for a late-round pick who could become an impactful bottom-pair defenseman in the NHL.

Veilleux will take some time to develop, as he played last season in the USHL before moving to the NCAA for likely three or more seasons. Veilleux committed to Cornell University, where he will play starting in the 2025-26 season. Veilleux played with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the 2024-25 season, and in 61 games, he produced 41 points (eight goals and 33 assists). Additionally, he did a good job keeping points off the board against a strong USHL team that just got stronger after adding Carolina Hurricanes 2025 second-round (62nd overall) pick forward Ivan Ryabkin. Veilleux won the defenseman of the week award once in the 2024-25 season and will look to build on a successful USHL season, taking that success to the NCAA level. His hockey IQ could offer some upside in the NHL.
