The Vancouver Canucks did not sign Forsell to an entry-level contract as of June 1, 2025. He is an unrestricted free agent.
Farjestäd’s playoff run came to an end against Skelleftea in the SHL quarterfinals. Forsell saw action in all six games of the series and took on a bigger role in the final three. He did not register a point, but was able to generate some offense for his team. The Canucks have a decision to make with Forsell, as he must be signed by June 1. To complicate matters, Forsell is still under contract with Farjestäd, meaning that he may see himself benefitting by staying in Sweden for a few years. It would likely be a few years before Forsell makes an impact in North America, but the next few months will determine the organization’s thought process.
Forsell closed out Färjestad’s regular season with four goals and nine points in 46 games, almost exactly matching his totals from a year ago. He plays on the fourth line and hovers around nine minutes per game. Overall, he put together a relatively consistent season and earned himself a spot on the playoff roster for Färjestad. His contract is up after this season, so the organization will have to evaluate whether or not to sign him after the SHL postseason.
Forsell has cooled off since his strong start to the season. He has registered just one point in 16 games and is playing bottom-line minutes for Farjestad. However, in 12 Champions League games, Forsell has five points. Forsell has to finish the season strong and hope to earn some more ice time.
After a down year in 2023-24, in which Forsell had just seven points in 46 games, he is already up to that number in just 15 games this year. Forsell has exhibited strong play along the boards and improved his body positioning. The 21-year-old plays better in his defensive zone with good positioning and an active stick. A plus-four rating this year compared to a minus-three rating a year ago helps to show his efforts on the game scoresheet. Forsell is aiming to make his way up the lineup for Färjestad and be a key contributor for one of the SHL’s top teams.
Forsell appears on track to be one of, if not the fastest rising prospects within the club’s farm. At just 19-years young, he has already proven to be a thriving contributor in the SHL. He split his season between the Allsvenskan and SHL this season, with most of his success coming within the higher tier. As a bottom-six option, Forsell contributed 13 points over 35 games – fifth among U20 skaters -, and added an impressive four points through seven playoff matchups. Although considered a long-term project, the young Swede’s constant effort, dedication and continued growth impressively stand out. Signed for the 23-24 season, he will spend next season continuing his growth among Sweden’s top league, in hopes to make the transition as a prominent prospect over in North America in 2024-25. The “diamond in the rough” cliché lives on.
Forsell continues to show tremendous value among the Canucks’ depth chart as a late-round pick. Splitting his time between the SHL and J20 Nationell, respectively, the 18-year-old has quickly become a fan favorite and intriguing prospect. With 30 points over 33 J20 matches, Forsell has been a pillar on an underwhelming Färjestad BK (J20) squad. He is a tremendous playmaker and is able to play the game at a high pace. Having recently signed an extension, Forsell will enjoy the next two seasons in the SHL. With his talents still raw, this allows ample time to grow and develop before potentially crossing the pond. There could be a pinch of surprise middle-six potential here.
Lucas Forsell has been drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round, 201st overall.
