Scouting Feed

Alex Wyatt. - DobberProspectsJuly 2025

Furlong skated for the San Jose Barracuda as a rookie in 2024-2025, posting one goal and seven assists in 66 games. He did not get involved in much offense, with an overall IPP of less than 20%, and five of his seven assists were secondary. Furlong’s offense slowed in his final QMJHL season and didn’t materialize in his first AHL campaign. He had shown decent puck distribution skills in junior, but the hallmark of his game is his physicality and defensive prowess. If he can develop a shut down game at the pro level, he will give himself a chance to land in San Jose’s bottom four if he can capitalize on future injury call up opportunities.

John Gove - DobberProspectsJuly 2024

Furlong’s 2023-24 QMJHL campaign ended in late March as a result of a season-ending shoulder surgery. The former Halifax Mooseheads captain will now head to the AHL and play for the Barracuda. Furlong projects as a possible bottom-pairing defenseman, with limited offensive upside.

Nick Richard - DobberProspectsJuly 2022

Furlong has been selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks.

Nick Richard - DobberProspectsJune 2022

Furlong put up solid numbers and played a big role for the Mooseheads this season, finishing with four goals and 38 assists in 67 games. He has good mobility on the back end and can quickly turn a loose puck retrieval into a slip pass to a supporting forward or protect it along the wall to wait for help. His skill doesn’t stand out but he can shake the first layer and start the rush with a clean first pass or by skating it out of his own zone. In the offensive zone, he isn’t flashy but he will jump into the play when he sees an opening and he facilitates from the point with composure. Furlong plays a solid defensive game, utilizing good footwork and an active stick to deter oncoming attackers off the rush, and he rarely overextends himself in defensive zone coverage. A smooth skater who can do a little bit of everything on the back end but doesn’t excel in any one area, he likely tops out as a two-way third-pairing defenseman but he has a good chance of reaching that ceiling.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
