Kaplan’s first AHL campaign with Lehigh Valley was below expectations – 13 points in 49 games with a minus-13. The size and physical tools that made him an interesting third-round pick remain present, as does the hockey sense that allowed him to contribute at Boston University. The skating deficiencies that followed him out of the NTDP have not been adequately addressed, and at the AHL level they are increasingly exposed. Entering year two of his three-year entry-level contract, this campaign is a meaningful one – if the offensive output and overall impact don’t improve, Philadelphia’s calculus on his future may change.

Kaplan recorded 18 points (10 goals, eight assists) over 38 games during his junior season at Boston University and served as an alternate captain while helping the Terriers to the Frozen Four and title game. Kaplan also added three assists in the NCAA tournament, including one in the national championship loss. Kaplan plays with a physical, power-forward style. He’s strong along the boards and intelligent with the puck. Kaplan signed a three-year entry-level deal and even made his debut with the Flyers late in the season. His blend of size and versatility could set Kaplan up as a potential bottom-six NHL option one day.

Kaplan uses his body as a weapon and is not afraid to mix it up in the corners or in front of the opposition goal. When with the puck, Kaplan takes whatever space is given to him before ripping a shot. Most of his shots come in and around the slot, which should eventually translate to goals.

Coming off his first season at Boston University, Kaplan was one of two Philadelphia Flyers prospects invited to the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp/World Junior Summer Showcase, which will occur from July 27, 2023, to August 4, 2023, in Plymouth, Michigan. The event is part of the selection process for Team USA before the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, from December 26, 2023, through January 5, 2024.

Kaplan was drafted 69th overall by the Flyers.
