Scouting Feed

JP Gambatese - DobberProspectsAugust 2025

Squires has enjoyed a burst in production after December during the 2024-25 season, showing off his skill set. He is a strong skater, even if his top speed is unimpressive. His edgework is strong, and he is relatively explosive in acceleration. His shot is decent – he can deceive goaltenders with his ability to change the angle of his wrist shots and has a snappy release. His best asset, though, is his hockey sense. He is aware of everyone on the ice at all times and fully understands that most of the time, there is a pass to be made to a player in open ice. He often sends the puck backward when in odd-man situations, leaving the puck to the trailing forward, who is likely more open than he is. He is less lethal in in-zone work, but he is a smart enough player to find open areas without notifying his coverage and can predict where the play will be. He has soft hands and a wide rapport of dekes and dangles that he can bring out in tight spaces, including the ability to score lacrosse-style goals. He could develop into a middle-six winger in a couple of years.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
