Othmann was traded to the Calgary Flames from the New York Rangers in a one-for-one swap for Jacob Battaglia. The 16th overall pick has seen his stock fall to reclamation-project status after splitting time between the Rangers and the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL over the last three seasons. Othmann has been a capable scoring forward in the minor leagues, but has struggled to contribute offensively during his NHL call-ups. The 23-year-old does not provide much value in fantasy hockey formats unless he puts things together in Calgary.

Othmann failed to make the Rangers once again out of this year’s training camp and has recently found himself mentioned in trade rumors. According to NHL insiders, his name has generated some interest with other NHL clubs. This situation is concerning for Rangers fans, as the player was misused in a mostly fourth-line role during his limited NHL action last year under former Rangers coach Peter Laviolette.
New York has failed on multiple occasions to develop their highly touted young forward draftees properly, and the organization has been forced to sell low on several prospects. This would undoubtedly be the case if they were to deal away Othmann. Following a brief NHL call-up, number 78 was reassigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack. As current Rangers coach Mike Sullivan has a fairly decent track record of working with younger players, hopefully, he was able to give Othmann the reset he needs to get his game back on track before he runs out of opportunities and the team is forced to sell him for pennies on the dollar.
The 2024-25 season was a bit of a frustrating season for Othmann, as he appeared in only 49 games, split between the Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, as he battled through injury. In 27 games with the Pack, Othmann collected 20 points, but in 22 games with the big club, he produced only two assists. One of the biggest criticisms of former Rangers bench boss Peter Laviolette is that he fails to provide sufficient opportunities for his young players to grow and develop. This was certainly the case with Othmann. The winger spent a good chunk of those 22 NHL games playing on the fourth line, on a Rangers team that was stripped down a bit at the trade deadline. Needless to say, it was not an ideal situation in terms of the player’s development. Fast forward to this upcoming Fall, number 78 will be in year three of his entry-level contract and will have plenty to prove for new Rangers coach Mike Sullivan, to help earn himself a nice raise and more ice time moving into his second NHL contract. Othmann possesses the motor, the tenacity, and the skillset to be an impactful point producer and fantasy option in upcoming seasons, as long as his ice time and role permit him to do so.
Othmann recently returned to action for the Hartford Wolf Pack after suffering an injury that kept him out of the lineup for over two months. After having already appeared in three NHL games in 2023-24, he is a player that might soon be under consideration for a call-up, as his gritty, fiery playing style might help solve what ails the big club in New York. The soon-to-be 22-year-old has skated in only six games with the Wolf Pack this season and has compiled three goals and four assists. During the 2023-24 campaign, where he appeared in 67 games with Hartford, the left-shot winger picked up 21 goals and 28 assists, for a total of 49 points, a very solid first season in professional hockey. Othmann, an RFA after 2025-26, will be looking to earn a full-time role in the NHL next season. Assuming that he can stay healthy for the remainder of his current deal, that remains a pretty safe bet, especially if the Rangers become sellers at the 2025 trade deadline.
