Strong, smooth skating defensive defenseman with some offensive upside. Needs to remain consistent on offense but has legit NHL upside with some penalty killing ability.

Scouting Feed

Nick Bass - DobberProspectsAugust 2025

Legault has put together a solid rookie campaign for the Chicago Wolves in the AHL, and while the stats might not show that, the eye test has been stellar for the young defenseman. He’s become an invaluable penalty killer, always one of the first two defenders out, with his hockey IQ being a standout attribute at this level. Offensively, his game has bright spots, particularly when he leaves his zone. Whether it is a stretch pass to a forward with speed and crispness or whether he skates it out himself, Legault is a safe bet to exit with the puck on his stick calmly. If the offensive traits start to shine, he will have a real top-six, or maybe even top-four, upside at the NHL level.

Nick Bass - DobberProspectsApril 2024

Legault’s sophomore season ended with the Quinnipiac Bobcats after the loss in the regional round of the NCAA tournament. This season, his development took a monumental leap, tripling his point total from nine (2022-23) to 24. Legault’s offensive game, going on a seven-game point streak, found a groove in the later part of the year. Legault’s shot and passing both massively improved from his freshman season. His defensive game was already solid, which has only been maintained during this time. With the attrition shown by Quinnipiac this offseason, Legault seems in line to play big minutes for the Bobcats next year.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
