Scouting Feed

Andrew Epps - DobberProspectsApril 2026

Luneau opened the 2025-26 season with the Ducks, drawing into six NHL games on the top pairing before being reassigned to San Diego. He registered no points and averaged roughly 16:33 of ice time at the NHL level, and the organization elected to keep him in the AHL rather than use him as a seventh defenseman. Since returning to the Gulls, he has been the best offensive defenseman on the roster. Through approximately 63 games he has posted nine goals and 28 assists for 37 points, ranking among the top dozen AHL blueliners in scoring despite playing on a team that has fought to stay in playoff contention all season. His second half has been particularly strong: he has recorded points in 11 of his last 12 games (5-13=18) and led all AHL defensemen in March scoring (5-11=16). The tools are evident on every shift. Luneau processes the offensive zone quickly, carries below the goal line with his head up, and finds seams that most AHL defenders do not attempt. A behind-the-back feed to Justin Bailey through traffic against Abbotsford late in March was the kind of play that separates projectable NHL contributors from career minor-leaguers. His shot from the point has become a legitimate weapon, particularly on the power play, and his willingness to join the rush from the weak side creates odd-man opportunities. The defensive game has matured enough that the rough edges from his brief NHL stint are shrinking. He closes on the puck harder, boxes out in front, and does not lose assignments the way he did even a year ago. The roadblock is roster math, not ability. LaCombe’s breakout, Zellweger, and Mintyukov lock up the left side, and Luneau remains the organization’s only right-shot defensive prospect with legitimate top-four upside. With Quenneville installed and the Ducks pushing for the postseason, Luneau should enter 2026-27 camp with every expectation of earning a full-time NHL role. For fantasy, his assist-heavy profile and power play access make him a strong pickup in deeper formats the moment he sticks.

– Markus R - DobberProspectsJune 2025

Luneau’s return from a lengthy injury saw him thrown straight into the fire. He began the season in the NHL with the Ducks’ top pairing as the organization assessed his progress. After six games, it became clear he wasn’t quite NHL-ready, and he was reassigned to San Diego, where he was tasked with leading the Gulls’ blueline. It took a few games for him to find his rhythm, but once he settled in, he quickly became a dominant force. A key development has been his skating, a weakness during his draft year; it has now become a legitimate strength. Luneau has also matured in his decision-making, showing better discipline with the puck, opting for simpler plays when needed, and no longer forcing risky passes. Luneau’s instincts remain excellent. He’s constantly in motion, always looking to get open, and has no hesitation carrying the puck deep into the offensive zone. He’s comfortable working below the goal line, keeping his head up to spot high-danger passing lanes or exploit a distracted goaltender. His offensive game, already a strength, continues to improve. In defense, he’s made noticeable strides. He no longer loses focus or positioning as he sometimes did in the past, and his physicality has improved. He battles harder for pucks, clears the crease, and isn’t shy about engaging along the boards. These all-around improvements have translated into production. He ranked fourth in AHL defenseman scoring and first on a per-game basis despite playing on one of the AHL’s most anemic offenses. Luneau remains the Ducks’ only right-shot defense prospect with a clear top-four upside. He’s likely to start next season in the NHL again, and this time, there’s a much better chance he stays. Cracking the top power-play unit will be difficult; he’ll have to compete with LaCombe, Zellweger, and Mintyukov. With a new coach and system in Anaheim, this could be the long-awaited breakout season for the Ducks. If that happens, Luneau will be a strong fantasy option, especially in deeper leagues that value point production.

Pat Quinn - DobberProspectsMay 2024

An injury riddled season for Luneau, who saw six games in the NHL and six in the AHL, saw him spent most of the campaign rehabbing an infection in his knee from mid-December onwards. Luneau will be looking to make the Ducks roster in 2024-25 and he has a good shot of making it.

Pat Quinn - DobberProspectsJuly 2023

Luneau completed his third stint in the QMJHL with the Gatineau Olympiques, and his points per game has been on an incredible incline of 0.58, 0.68, and finally 1.28. The QMJHL is notorious for its high scoring and free-wheeling defense, so it has been good since that Luneau has improved so much. Once he feels comfortable in a league, his game really shines, and it almost feels like he is too good for the CHL at the moment. Unfortunately, he will spend another season there so all he can do is just work on playing in his own end and dealing with pressure. There is a great chance Luneau becomes a solid top four defenseman, the powerplay time may be all eaten up by the time he gets there though.

Nick Richard - DobberProspectsJuly 2022

The Anaheim Ducks have selected Luneau in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft, 53rd overall.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
