Brandsegg-Nygard had one of the stronger first AHL campaigns in the Detroit system in years, posting 44 points in 60 games with Grand Rapids while earning 14 NHL appearances that were quiet but instructive. The Norwegian winger brings exactly what his draft profile promised – outstanding puck battles, a high compete level, and the physical positioning and stick work that consistently wins pucks in tight areas. He is already a reliable 200-foot forward who can play in any situation. The variable that will determine his ceiling is skating: a more dynamic edge game would unlock the ability to play a genuine middle-six role rather than a checking-line one. At 20, with a 44-point AHL year already in the bank, the organizational confidence is well-founded. A dynasty hold who could push for a regular NHL role this season.

This kid is the complete package, playing a mature 200-foot game with nearly a point per game in his first year as a pro in North America. I love this puck hound’s drive, using his strong stride and low center of gravity to create space for himself and punish opponents. It is surprising how powerful he already looks among men, having just turned 20. He possesses an above-average hockey IQ, good vision, deceptive puck skills, and a decent shot. He’s filling every possible fantasy category in the AHL The Wings brass is letting him get accustomed to hockey on this side of the pond, and he is making a great impression. He is already versatile enough to adapt to any role in the show, but let him build on this strong start and see where his development goes with top-line minutes for the Griffins. I would project him as an opportunistic middle-six player in Detroit as of next year, outworking his peers to secure a steady top-six role in no time.

June 205 – MBN didn’t put up massive numbers when he played against men in the SHL, but he was a force for Norway at the Olympics playing alongside Mats Zuccarello. He is a tenacious forechecker, likes to throw the body even though he’s not overly big, and he is close to NHL-ready. He’ll get a long look in camp this fall. MBN has potential for second-line offense alongside PIM-per-game potential as well as Hits. He got into two games in the AHL after his SHL season, but was given limited minutes on a depth line as he had to get familiar with the coaching and team. –
