A mobile defender with above-average tools across the board whose offensive production has been muted by playing against men as a teen. Boom-bust potential.

Scouting Feed

James Connelly - DobberProspectsJune 2025

Jansson spent his second SHL season primarily on the bottom pairing, similar to last year. He saw a slight increase in his ice time, but his production remained essentially the same, with four points in 50 games compared to three points in 50 games the previous year. Jansson is more of a long-term project for the Panthers. It is always a good sign when a prospect in their draft year is playing in professional games, let alone in the year prior. Jansson has now spent the better part of five seasons playing professional hockey and is only 21 years old. While his name and playing style are not the flashiest, his relentless motor makes him a sleeper candidate for a future top-four defensive role in the NHL, as long as he can string everything together with his long development runway.

Mark Henry - DobberProspectsMay 2025

On May 6, 2025, the Florida Panthers signed Jansson to a three-year, entry-level contract starting in the 2025-26 season.

James Connelly - DobberProspectsAugust 2024

Many will look at Jansson’s statistics (only three assists in 50 games with Lulea) and think he has limited upside at the NHL level. However, his three points came while averaging just 7:04 minutes a night, which means he was sheltered in the 2023-24 season. In his time, Jansson demonstrated the ability to compete against the highest level of competition in Sweden and showed that he deserves a greater opportunity heading into the next season, as he had shown progression throughout the year. His passing ability is strong and should, at the very least, help him have a solid career in Europe. Jansson is still under contract till the end of this upcoming season, and once it expires, he will likely sign with the Panthers and spend a year in the AHL, barring a massive breakout season in 2024-25.

Ben Gehrels - DobberProspectsJune 2023

Jansson, 19, is an above-average skater who handles the puck well and plays with constant energy and initiative. He somehow already has a couple of professional campaigns on his resume in Sweden’s second-tier Allsvenskan, and next up is the SHL. Given that he has been playing against men for the last two years as a teenager, his muted offensive totals (15 points in 91 games) are not overly concerning. The Panthers’ brass hope that their fourth-rounder from 2022 will eventually develop the instincts and hockey sense to match his raw physical tools. Plays still tend to die on his stick as he skates and handles past opportunities into dead ends. His dominant performance against his peers at the most recent World Juniors (10 points in 7 games) is an intriguing glimpse into Jansson’s upside. He is an ongoing project, but the wait could be worth it.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
