Bystedt is a former first round pick of the Sharks and his fall has been largely his inconsistency and lack of offensive upside compared to his counterparts in the system. 2024-25 represented his first season in North America, and while his 31 points in 50 appearances is solid for the 21-year-old, he still has another gear to reach. And although he has been pushed down the pecking order on the prospect depth chart, Bystedt can still find his way onto the roster and be on the short list for injury call-ups.

Bystedt suffered an apparent lower-body injury in an American Hockey League game between the San Jose Barracuda and Ontario Reign on April 12, 2025.

Bystedt spent most of the 2023-24 season on loan in the SHL, playing for Linköping HC. While there, he recorded eight goals and seven assists in 47 games. In April, Bystedt joined the Barracuda in the AHL, posting an impressive four goals and three assists in eight games. For 2024-25, Bystedt expects to be a part of the Barracuda’s opening night roster. However, an NHL call-up is not out of the realm of possibility if he plays at a consistently high level.

Bystedt may be the hottest prospect in the Sharks stable, as his post-draft season has been full of highlights. His performance at the World Juniors was especially eye-opening as he led Team Sweden in scoring with 10 points in seven games. He has continued his strong showing in the SHL, where he is the third-highest-scoring U20 player in the league with 20 points in 45 games. The speed with which Bystedt has developed his offensive game is extremely encouraging and boosts his ultimate upside. He is a player, and I think he will only improve when he moves to North American-sized ice, as he is an imposing presence with his 6-4 frame.

The San Jose Sharks have selected Bystedt with the 27th pick in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft.
