The 21-year-old Honzek built on a promising AHL debut last year with a strong depth performance with NHL Calgary this year before an upper-body injury cut his season short. Unfortunately, the injury cost him a potential Olympics appearance with Slovakia, which would have been a valuable addition to an international resume he has been quietly building through the World Juniors. Flames coach Ryan Huska was publicly optimistic that the timing of the injury – occurring during the season rather than in the offseason – means Honzek will be fully healthy for training camp, with the added benefit of working exclusively with Calgary’s medical and training staff for a full year.

The complementary power forward projection from last year’s assessment remains intact, and this season’s NHL look only strengthens the case that a middle-six role is a realistic outcome. A dynasty hold with upside in deep leagues.

Honzek made the jump to North American professional hockey this past year and looked the part. Scoring 21 points in 52 AHL games, Honzek also started the year in the NHL with the Flames. As he continues to grow into his frame, he will compete to become a full-time NHL player. While the production may not be where some would have liked it to be, the Flames’ top pick in 2023 was still impressive in the AHL. With the tools to become a low-tier power forward in the NHL, Honzek may never become an elite first-line talent, but he very well could be a nice complementary piece who can build chemistry with elite talents. At the very least, he will be a good third-line player with a higher upside.

Honzek has signed his entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames. Honzek finished his year with the Vancouver Giants as a top-tier player and was a finalist for the rookie of the year award in the WHL. Honzek will look to stay healthy and participate in the WJC again this season, where he can hopefully represent Slovakia this December.

Honzek has been selected 16th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2023 NHL Draft.
