Summary

Development

Bio

A big, physically aggressive defenseman who doesn’t produce much offensively. He needs to work on his positioning; his aggression leads to being out of position. He’s off the fantasy radar, but in deep leagues that value hits, he could be worth an add as he develops throughout his career.

Scouting Feed

Markus R - DobberProspectsJune 2025

Smith signed his Entry-Level Contract in April. Smith has shown steady improvement in several key areas that are necessary for him to earn a shot at the NHL. At 6-6, his size and reach, combined with a naturally aggressive playing style, make him a shutdown defenseman through and through. The biggest obstacles to his development have been his skating and his limited puck skills. The good news is that his skating has improved. It’s still below NHL standards, but there’s clear progress. Smith has also started to show more confidence moving the puck and even joining the rush on occasion. He’ll spend next season with the San Diego Gulls, where continued development in his skating and puck play will be critical. Until those areas improve further, he’s unlikely to be considered for any NHL role. For Fantasy GMs, Smith is a long shot. He’ll never produce many points, but in deeper leagues that particularly value hits, he may be worth keeping an eye on.

Mark Henry - DobberProspectsJune 2023

The Anaheim Ducks drafted Smith in the fourth round (97th overall) in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

What is PNHLe?

PNHLe is an offensive stat that is used to project a player’s point potential at the NHL level and is meant to standardize a variety of leagues so that prospects can be compared from one league with another.

PNHLe attempts to equalize all leagues, age and positions so that the offensive potential of a prospect can easily be compared with others, while also projecting future NHL point potential in the prime years of a player.

The problem with NHLe

The premise of the NHLe stat is certainly a great idea. If a player jumps directly from one league to the NHL there should be some precedent set by historical values that would indicate how many points that player should project to having in a full NHL season. However, it always bothered me that NHLe never took into account that younger players in the same league would always have a massive disadvantage compared to those that have more experience and are physically more mature in the same league. NHLe only looks at the present to predict how many points in one league are equated at the NHL level.
