Succé för Toronto utan Matthews - men vad händer sen?

En kaxig, självgod vildhjärna utan förmåga till långsiktigt, strategiskt tänkande? Eller en erfaren, kompetent General Manager med framtidstänk och rent av ödmjukhet bakom fasaden? Åsikterna är många om säsongens nye GM för the Maple Leafs och då ett ordkrig nu blossat upp mellan GM Westman och Buffalo Sabres GM beslutade vi oss för att syna THL:s just nu näst formstarkaste lag och dess ledning. Är det ett lag och en ledning som är rustade för slutspel och kommande säsonger?

Låt oss börja med en titt på det som inte går att ha åsikter om, det som helt enkelt är fakta; Toronto är just nu THL:s formstarkaste lag. Inte sedan 19 januari har Leafs förlorat en match under ordinarie matchtid. De senaste elva matcherna har slutat med åtta segrar, en förlust i OT och två förluster på straffar, totalt 19 av 22 möjliga poäng! Och som om streaken i sig inte var tillräckligt imponerande har den alltså kommit till utan lagkaptenen Auston Matthews på isen! Matthews lämnade isen redan efter 3:34 i första perioden i mötet mot Islanders den 23/1. Toronto vann matchen med 4-0, men varken Westman eller Torontofansen var särskilt glada efter vinsten.

- Oj, det var många tankar som for genom huvudet under och omedelbart efter den matchen, erkänner Westman. Det såg riktigt otäckt ut när Matts gick omkull och det viktigaste var naturligtvis att få veta att han var ok och skulle kunna komma tillbaka igen förhållandevis snabbt ändå. Sen började såklart tankarna kring lagbygget de kommande månaderna lika snabbt.

Men Westman förnekar att han varken då eller senare skulle drabbats av den panik som analytikern och självutnämnde experten Elliotte Friedman vid upprepade tillfällen påstod.

- Nej, nej, nej! skrattar han. Matthews (och inledningsvis även Pulocks – reds. Anm.) skada var självklart en utmaning att hantera, men även om några tycker Toronto är ett obalanserat lag med bara topp och ingen bredd är jag väldigt nöjd med lagets sammansättning. Vi hade dessutom precis värvat Athanasiou och han visade direkt med sitt hat trick i debuten att han var beredd att axla ett stort ansvar.

Utmaning, men inte panik i Toronto när Matthews blev långtidsskadad

Och som vi redan nämnt har ju alla förväntningar att Toronto skulle falla samman som ett korthus utan Matthews kommit på skam. Athanasious poängproduktion stannade av något, men istället klev andra fram ännu tydligare; Marner, Nylander och Rielly för att nämna några. Och sedan Phil Kessel kom in från Vegas har han också redan bidragit med sex poäng. Samtidigt har Kuemper hittat storformen mellan stolparna och med sina två raka hållna nollor mot Chicago och Buffalo har han nu samlat på sig fem shut outs och är i det avseende bäst i THL före Bobrovsky och Markström.

En närmare titt på övertids- och strafförlusten visar att två av dem var mot Montreal och en mot Columbus. Samtidigt som det är oroande att man oftast förlorar de matcher som går till övertid och att många matcher just i slutspelet kan förväntas vara jämna är det ändå en styrka att man i grundspelet lyckas ta poäng även när spelet inte stämmer fullt ut.

Samtidigt är det nu många som undrar vad som ska hända sen, när Matthews kommer tillbaka. Westman har utnyttjat det faktum att Matthews placerats på LTIR och både uppgraderat forwardsidan, värvat en dyrare andremålvakt och plockat upp och plockat in fler spelare än vad som är möjligt att rymma under lönetaket när Matthews dryga 11,6 miljoner ska räknas in igen. Och eftersom Toronto inte offentliggjort sina planer spekuleras det nu än en gång om att det ”inte finns någon plan”, att det måste ”rensas rejält” och att GM Westman ”kör YOLO”. Spekulationer som den här gången fick bägaren att rinna över Westman, med bakgrund inom granskande journalistik.

- Ja, men jag fattar ju att det är många rykten i den här branschen och att det är en rättighet både fans och media har; att få spekulera om både sitt egna och andras lag, säger Westman. Men i det här fallet är det ju rätt uppenbart att ryktena är så tomma att det luktar mer rysk trollfabrik, eller åtminstone avundsjuka. Det borde vara uppenbart för alla, men visst jag kan bjuda på en enkel matematiklektion, säger Westman och greppar whiteboeardpennan.

- Vi ligger just nu exakt 9 192 884 kronor under lönetaket. Om exakt 27 dagar kommer Matts med sina 11 634 000 kronor tillbaka. Det betyder att innan dess måste vi minska lönerna i pro med 2 441 116 kronor. Med Matts skulle vi ha 14 forwards aktiva och planen för när och hur detta kommer att hanteras är tydlig och känd för mig, coacher, aktuella spelare och eventuella andra inblandade. Vi kommer under taket och vi kommer att täcka upp för eventuella skador. Det finns ingen anledning för mig att avslöja planerna för Friedman eller andra nyfikna. Vill de fortsätta genera sig själva med sina gissningar så får de göra det.

Så avslutningsvis till kaxigheten, självgodheten eller ”rekordet i förolämpningar” och andra omdömen som ofta hörs när Torontos GM kommer på tal. Hur ser Westman på dem?

- Mitt jobb är att lotsa laget till framgång, inte att vinna popularitetstävlingar. Jag har en otrolig respekt för alla mina kollegor i ligan, De har ett stort kunnande, stort engagemang och vill alla sitt eget lags bästa. Precis som spelarna på isen händer det att jag och andra ibland försöker komma ”under skinnet” på de andra, att få dem lite ur balans. Jag tror att vi alla vet att det enbart är den del av spelet och inget annat.
